I am writing from a blank mind and a shattered heart. I received the most devastating news of my life from someone I love most. There is nothing I can do to repair the situation, undo the consequence or make the agonizing pain disappear. I normally have answers, an encouraging word, a smile, a hug and a prayer.
I am now helpless. I stand here screaming for help, crying out in all directions, but I cannot produce an audible sound; therefore no one is rushing to the rescue. It feels hopeless. I am drowning in a deep sea of my own tears mixed with those of my loved one. All around me lay only the shattered pieces of my heart because there is nothing else left. Nothing.
Nothing, that is, but Love. It is the intense, overwhelming, unconditional LOVE that pours out when you are otherwise empty.
Have you ever felt this way? Perhaps someone you love and adore is going through something devastating and you are powerless to intervene.
Maybe you are the one facing insurmountable obstacles. You feel discouraged. Everyone around you has a word of comfort, a prayer and maybe even a “Bless your Heart”. Southern ladies say that when there is nothing left to say, by the way. And it certainly does nothing to comfort you.
Life is difficult and we will struggle. Your heart is sore from the beating it has taken from the barrage of pressures. But only the word of God is a comfort to those that are struggling and looking for hope. Often, the Bible is a last resort. Prayer is Plan B.
I encourage you today to PRAY FIRST. Surrender. Your battle is already won. But you must fight armed with love; love is powerful. In the throes of battle, love is not normally the first tool we think of as a mighty weapon to wield.
However, 1 Corinthians tells us “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails.” (NIV) 1 Corinthians 13:4–8a
Did you get that? LOVE always protects. LOVE always perseveres. LOVE. NEVER. FAILS.
I try not to use words like “always” and “never” because in a natural situation, those are considered harsh and final words that rarely ring true in everyday conversations.
Love Never Fails. I have no answers this side of Heaven for why this is happening. But the Word of God promises that Love Never Fails. I certainly trust the Word of God more than I trust myself. The Lord can say never and always. His word is truth.
Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.” (NIV)
I am nothing. I gain nothing… without Love. But when we come to know the love Christ has for us, when we recognize and claim the full power of what scripture tells us about love; then our burdens become bearable. We can hope. We become everything; we gain everything.
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take this away from me. But He said to me, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”
Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
~2 Corinthians 12:8-10~
When I am weak, then I am strong. Take heart and be comforted for when you feel shattered, broken and weak; only then is your strength at its greatest. Your strength comes from the power of the Lord within your heart. But you must receive His unconditional, peaceful, overwhelming and unending love.
I have no answers. But I can assure you, no matter what you are going through, Christ’s love for us is deep, it is wide and it is immeasurable.
In the midst of our broken hearts & shattered ruins, the Lord’s presence rises like a beacon of Hope. I am so thankful for that promise and I tingle with anticipation of how He will use this brokenness for His Glory.
Faith makes life possible.
Hope makes life workable.
Love makes life BEAUTIFUL.
